FRIDAY 6-27-2008

6-27-2008
Friday - (Visit to the Silk Factory and Pearl Factory)

Mr. Nystrom elated at the thought of purchasing silk knee high socks

Reoccurring theme with Alex and Zach

Getting a lesson on the silk worm's life cycle

Never, ever under any circumstances touch this little button here.

ahhhhhhhhh...The famous Abraham Lincoln.

Machines extracting the silk and spooling them

Don't know exactly what the brush was used for. I think it was an ancient method of beating the worms to produce more silk.

Cody and some random hands using the Rockwell hardness test to see how strong the silk was.

Workers demonstrating how they stretch the silk

Michael, Nikia, and Yomarie testing the softness of the silk

Demonstration on how the silk is stretched to make a layer for silk sheets and comforters

The students displaying that it is a lot harder than the workers made it look

CD bought a "couple of things", Zack bought the sickest silk tie ever, Justin bought silk socks, Alex bought a silk bathrobe, and Eric decided just hop in the picture

After we toured the silk factory, we headed over to the Pearl factory to see how pearls are extracted and manufactured into jewelry.

Getting a brief run-down of the pearl extraction process

How many pearls do you think will be found in this fresh water oyster?

There were about 22 pearls found in this one. The pearls were taken out and the oyster was thrown out. They don't preserve the meat.

The Chinese are very wily. Their tours and demonstrations end up in some type of sales pitch and they drag you in and get you.

They got Mark...

...and some students, and me. Here in this pic, the saleswoman tied the knots right in front of us. Very professional.

After I dropped a lot of money on some pearls, I was able to take a complimentary photo with the two salespeople that sucked me right in. All jokes aside, the pearls that Mr. Nystrom and I left with were absolutely beautiful. I received a special discount and some free earrings because they thought I was a student...lol

Some cool architecture we saw on the way to lunch

The restaurant where we ate our last dinner

Mrs. Berman, Yomi, and Mike posing before the last dinner

Both China groups congregating in one of the main dining rooms

Some entertainment before the main course

Nikia was a little confused at first until she figured him out

Eating dinner in China for the last time

VIDEOS

Silk being processed

The girls showing they can stretch better than the guys

Judging by the video, I think the girls did a better job.

Opening the oyster at Sam's

The Man of a thousand masks (watch closely)...Well actually he had about 7-8.

The Mask finally reveals himself
